Mizzou softball’s freshmen paved the way for the Tigers to earn a 7-0 win Tuesday against Kansas City in Columbia.
After a slow start in the first three innings, the bats came alive in the fourth with a homer from Abby Hay, and from there it was history.
Freshman Saniya Hill followed up Hay's hit with a homer of her own, marking her first career home run. She struck again in the fifth, recording a single to bring in two more runs for the Tigers.
“I just immediately thought of my dad, and I know he's probably so proud of me right now,” Hill said. "It's really just a perfect-perfect.”
Pinch hitter Gracie Britton also ripped a double in the fourth to add two runs to the score. Madison Uptegrove then notched a sacrifice fly to right field in the fifth to bring in a run and secure the shutout win.
The pitchers shone as well, with Marissa McCann making a catch on the mound before turning around and throwing to first for a double play in the second inning. She earned the win and is now 10-9 on the season. She allowed two hits with no runs and struck out seven.
Abby Carr took the mound in the fifth, where she fielded a grounder in the circle and threw to second to get an out. She fielded another grounder in the sixth and threw to first for another out. She allowed one hit and logged two strikeouts.
“They were extremely aggressive, which I loved,” Missouri coach Larissa Anderson said. “Really happy with the adjustment. That takes a lot of discipline to be able to do.”
The Tigers (27-26, 8-13 Southeastern Conference) are set to host their final weekend series of the regular season against Tennessee. Game 1 will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday at Mizzou Softball Stadium.
