BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The legal fight between the Southeastern Conference and LSU moves to a federal courtroom Wednesday as the league attempts to block the university from fielding professional athletes.
U.S. District Judge Annemarie Carney Axon will hear arguments at 1 p.m. in Birmingham. SEC officials are asking for an injunction to uphold conference policies that ban member institutions from placing players signed to NFL, NBA, or WNBA contracts on their active rosters, citing First Amendment protections for expressive association.
In addition, the league filed for a temporary restraining order to stop LSU from disrupting a Thursday meeting of SEC presidents. University leaders plan to vote during that session on expelling LSU from the conference, an action that needs two-thirds support to pass.
An amended complaint lists LSU President Wade Rousse, Athletic Director Verge Ausberry, football coach Lane Kiffin, the university board of supervisors, and Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill as defendants.
