Mizzou wrestling finished the final day of NCAA Championships, with Aeoden Sinclair and Cam Steed placing in the top five. The team finished with a total of 34 points, finishing the event at No. 14 for the second season in a row.
In the 184-pound weight class, Sinclair finished third as Mizzou's highest placer at the event. He racked up two major decision wins in Session V over fellow freshman Brock Mantanona (Michigan) and Caleb Campos (American) in the third-place match.
Campos was pushed into the third-place match after Angelo Ferrari (Iowa) medically forfeited from today's action and had to settle for a sixth-place finish. Sinclair's only losses of the season came against Ferrari, once at National Duals back in November and then again in the quarterfinals on Friday. Both of their matches were decided in overtime, but Sinclair will have to wait until next season to face Ferrari again.
Steed found less success in Session V in the 174-pound weight class. Steed reached the prerequisite to become a two-time All-American after winning his quarterfinal matchup against Danny Wask (Navy) on Friday. He struggled on Saturday, losing his first match of the day 5-2 to Carson Kharchla (Ohio State), sending him to the fifth-place match. He won in a rematch against 5-3 for his highest career finish. Last season Steed finished seventh at the NCAA Tournament.
While Steed and Sinclair will return to the lineup next season, Mizzou still has several holes to fill in next year's lineup. The Tigers lose Josh Edmond (149), Teague Travis (157), Max Mayfield (165), and Evan Bates (197), as all four wrestlers are out of eligibility.
However, Mizzou has quite a plethora of talent returning in lightweight room, keeping them at the 125-149 weight classes. J Conway is a possible candidate to take over at 165, as he qualified to the NCAA tournament during the 2024-25 season 157.
The Tigers will retain Mack Mauger, Gage Walker and Jarrett Stoner, who all qualified for the NCAA Tournament this season. In addition they bring back Kade Moore, who qualified for the event in both 2023-24 and 2024-25.
Coach Brian Smith will have plenty of pieces to build a team that can finish even higher at the NCAA Tournament next season.
