Day one of the Husker Invitational saw three wins for Mizzou in its six Friday matches.
The lone team upperclassman Millie Skelton and freshman Evelyn Whiteside were the main standouts of the day.Â
Skelton and Whiteside defeated the Kansas pair of Yerkezhan Arystanbekova and Anna Putilina 8-5 for the first win of Mizzou's season. The match also marked the first collegiate win for Whiteside, a five-star recruit.
In singles, Skelton ran the court against Denver's Franki Tye. Skelton won the first set 6-1 and the second 6-2.Â
Whiteside defeated Gabriella Kellner from Iowa in two 6-2 sets.Â
Freshmen Alba Salles Canudas and Leticia Bazan lost a doubles match to the Nebraska team of Neda Rahimkhani and Emma Rizzetto.
Rizzetto also beat Salles Canudas in singles play. The Italian talent won in a three-set match that went 6-1 Rizetto, 7-6 Canudas then 6-2 Rizetto.Â
KU's Meg McCarty downed Missouri's Leticia Bazan in three sets. Bazan got blanked 6-0 in the final set. She struggled to assert her first serve early in the match, which resulted in her losing control of the initial set.Â
The Husker Invitational will continue Saturday as players from different teams face off in a round-robin format. Matches will start at 2:10 p.m. in Lincoln, Nebraska.
