Tennessee bested Mizzou softball 3-1 in Game 1 of the Tigers' final weekend series Thursday in Columbia. Despite the Volunteers carrying a two-run lead entering the final frame, Mizzou refused to be shut out and fought to stay alive to the very last swing.
“That is the most competitive game that we’ve played with a loss,” Mizzou coach Larissa Anderson said. “I’m proud of the fight that this team had. I feel really good going into tomorrow.”
After a brief weather delay, Tennessee pitcher Karlyn Pickens and Mizzou's Cierra Harrison dueled it out for the first four innings, preventing either team from scoring. Harrison was credited with the loss, falling to 10-10 on the season. She allowed eight hits and three runs with five innings pitched.
The Missouri defense had a minor tremor in the fifth, as two fumbled ground balls by Harrison and Madison Uptegrove allowed runners to advance bases.
Tennessee took advantage of the mistakes as pinch hitter Makenzie Butt singled to center to bring home two runs for the Volunteers. Alannah Leach kicked off the sixth with a home run, extending the Tennessee lead to three.
Stefania Abruscato barreled a solo homer in the sixth to score Mizzou’s only run of the game.
Despite trailing by two runs late, Missouri kept its energy up. Pinch hitters Gracie Britton and Linny Ramsey reached base, setting a chance for the Tigers to score in the seventh. However, Abby Carr failed to bring the runners home as the Tigers lost 3-1.
This was the Tigers' first game with multiple erros since Feb. 14 against Florida Atlantic. This didn’t shake Mizzou, coming through with several big plays in the field.
In the first inning, Kayley Lenger relayed the ball home to hold the runner at third. Abruscato then threw to Sophie Smith at second to catch Leach attempting to stretch her base hit.
In the sixth, Addy Waits collected a ground ball before stepping on third for an out, relaying the ball to first for the double play. Uptegrove closed the inning after collecting an infield single and throwing the ball home, catching a Volunteer runner trying to take the extra base.
Waits recorded two more putouts in the seventh, patrolling the hot corner.
"It's unfortunate those two errors happened, but we made up for it,"Anderson said. "I'm really proud of those defensive plays."
Mizzou (27-27, 8-14 SEC) will continue the series against Tennessee (41-8, 15-7) at 6 p.m. Friday at Mizzou Softball Stadium.
