Mark Mitchell is currently ineligible to play for Missouri after the Kentucky Court of Appeals dissolved a temporary injunction Friday that had allowed athletes from the 2022 high school class to compete for another season.
The appeals court granted the NCAA’s request and dissolved a Jefferson Circuit Court order issued Aug. 21. That decision removes the temporary eligibility Mitchell had received and leaves him unable to compete for the Tigers under the current ruling.
Mitchell and CJ Gunn were listed a printed roster for Mizzou in a picture shared to X by Every True Tiger Brands Chief Executive Officer and General Manager Marc Moccia. The post has since been deleted.
The case centers on whether athletes who graduated from high school in 2022 are eligible for a fifth season of college competition. The NCAA adopted a new eligibility model that provides certain athletes with five years to compete in five years, starting with athletes in the class of 2023.
The appeals court also determined that the Jefferson Circuit Court’s order was a temporary injunction because it altered the athletes’ existing eligibility status. The court said the lower court did not have sufficient evidence to support issuing the injunction.
The ruling does not necessarily end the legal dispute. The appeals court said the athletes could pursue a new temporary injunction through the Kentucky circuit court. Another option for Mitchell is to dismiss his case in Kentucky and attempt to refile in Missouri.
Mitchell's ineligibility would be a big blow to coach Dennis Gates' roster for the 2026-27 season. He has been one of the most notable players in Gates' time at Missouri.
Early this season, Missouri has shown vulnerabilities. Against Florida, it showed that its strengths can be more than enough to push itself to needle-moving wins.
