Merz says no 'immediate' Ukraine EU membership, floats Kyiv joining meetings

(The Center Square) – Former FBI Director James Comey could face up to 20 years in prison following an indictment on two felony counts, with the Department of Justice accusing him of making threats against President Donald Trump.

The former leading law enforcement officer was indicted in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina Eastern Division, accused of “knowingly and willfully” making a “threat to take the life of, and to inflict bodily harm upon, the President of the United States.”

The case stems from a May 2025 photo Comey posted on social media depicting seashells spelling out “86 47.” The number “86” is often interpreted as slang for getting rid of something, while “47” refers to Trump, the 47th president of the United States.

Though the charging documents claim “a reasonable recipient who is familiar with the circumstances would interpret as a serious expression of an intent to do harm to the President of the United States.”

The second felony count claims Comey “knowingly and willfully did transmit in interstate and foreign commerce a communication that contained a threat to kill the President, Donald J. Trump,” by posting the image on the social media site, Instagram.

If convicted, the former FBI director could face a maximum sentence of 10 years for each charge.

During a news conference Tuesday afternoon at the U.S. Department of Justice, FBI Director Kash Patel reiterated the charges against the former director.

“James Comey allegedly threatened the life of the President of the United States. And as you all now know, shortly after posting that threat, he deleted that threat and then issued an apology. All of that information was presented to the grand jury, and Mr. Comey will have his day in court, and his ability to speak to a jury of his peers,” Patel told reporters.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche appeared to use Comey as an example of how the law enforcement community and the Justice Department are committed to prosecuting individuals accused of threatening the president.

“Threatening the life of the President of the United States will never be tolerated by the Department of Justice … While this case is unique, this indictment stands out because of the name of the defendant. His alleged conduct is the same kind of conduct that we will never tolerate and that we will always investigate and regularly prosecute,” Blanche told reporters.

In addition to the indictment, Blanche confirmed that a grand jury not only returned the indictment but also an arrest warrant against Comey.

The indictment comes one day after the suspected gunman in Saturday night’s shooting and assassination attempt against Trump during the annual White House Correspondence Dinner in Washington, D.C. was arraigned. The incident marks the third assassination attempt on the president since 2024.

The US envoy in Ukraine named less than a year ago is stepping down, the State Department said Tuesday, as President Donald Trump pressures Kyiv to reach an elusive deal with Russia.

The Financial Times, quoting unnamed sources, said Julia Davis had grown frustrated with Trump over his lack of support for Ukraine, but the State Department denied clashes and said she was retiring.

"It is false to suggest Ambassador Davis is resigning 'over differences with Donald Trump,'" State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said.

"She will continue to proudly advance President Trump's policies until she officially departs Kyiv in June 2026 and retires from the Department," he said.

Davis, the top US embassy official as the charge d'affaires but not a Senate-confirmed ambassador, was named by the Trump administration last May after her predecessor, fellow career diplomat Bridget Brink, stepped down.

Brink, who had been appointed by president Joe Biden and is now running as a Democrat for Congress, said later that she had grown alarmed by Trump's "appeasement" of Russia and how he "put pressure on the victim, Ukraine."

Trump had vowed quickly to end the Ukraine war, which began with Russia's invasion in February 2022, but has failed to secure a deal.

The month after returning to the White House, Trump and Vice President JD Vance publicly berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a televised meeting, accusing him of ingratitude.

Trump more recently has again publicly pressured Zelensky, saying he should cede territory to Russia to secure an agreement.

(The Center Square) – Nine years after suing, a flight attendant won her case against Southwest Airlines and the Transport Workers Union after she was fired for opposing union dues being used to support pro-abortion activities. She also won $1 million in damages in a lawsuit filed by the National Right to Work Foundation. 

The case involves a unanimous jury ruling, a federal judge chastising and sanctioning the airline after it wouldn’t comply with his order, and an appeal to the Fifth Circuit. 

Dallas resident Charlene Carter successfully won her case in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas in July 2022 after suing the airline and TWU Local 556 in 2017. But the case didn’t end there.

Carter sued Southwest Airlines alleging it discriminated against her religious beliefs, violating Title VII of the Civil Right Act of 1964 and TWU Local 556 violated the Railway Labor Act. The jury unanimously agreed, The Center Square reported. She also filed a complaint with the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission alleging employment discrimination in 2017 after she was fired for opposing union dues being used to support pro-abortion activities. 

Carter, a pro-life Christian who’d been a member of TWU Local 556 since 1996, resigned her membership in 2013 but was still forced to pay union fees as a condition of employment. Although Texas is a right to work state, state right to work laws don’t protect airline and railroad employees from paying forced union fees because they’re governed by the Railway Labor Act. The law allows union officials to have workers fired for refusing to pay union dues or fees.

The case also brought to light how Carter was treated by union representatives in emails obtained by The Center Square. A TWU member referred to her as a “cancerous tumor” that needed to be “eradicated when ever [sic] possible or it spreads,” said she was “incredibly dangerous” and that he was “all about targeted assassinations.” 

TWU didn’t respond to a request for comment when asked if it supported what appears to be an incitement to violence against or targeted harassment of employees.

After Southwest lost in court, it issued a notice to flight attendants stating it “does not discriminate” against employees for their religious beliefs, even after a jury unanimously found that it did. It also sent another communication stating employees should not engage in workplace speech similar to Carter’s, prompting Carter to file a motion with the court requesting it to sanction Southwest. 

In response, U.S. District Judge Brantley Starr sanctioned the airline and issued a blistering rebuke of its officials and attorneys, The Center Square reported.

After the unanimous jury verdict, the district court ordered Southwest and TWU to give Carter the maximum amount of compensatory and punitive damages permitted under federal law and reinstate her as a flight attendant. She was rehired but did not receive compensatory damages until after a Fifth Circuit ruling. 

The airlines and TWU had appealed to the Fifth Circuit and lost. The appellate court affirmed the lower court’s finding that Southwest and TWU discriminated against Carter based on her religious beliefs.

Now, a Satisfaction of Judgment filed with the district court indicates that Carter was paid damages totaling $946,102.87, far less than the $5 million initially awarded to her by the jury. The NRWF told The Center Square that the jury awarding her more than $5 million illustrated “just how bad the jury found Southwest and TWU’s discrimination against her to be.”

“Being a flight attendant is my livelihood and my passion, and union officials tried to manipulate company policy to upend my career simply because I spoke out about my most sincerely held beliefs,” Carter said in a statement. “This case has been a long, hard fight, but I’ll never stop sticking up for what I know is right, and I hope that both my employer and TWU union bosses have learned that it doesn’t pay to stifle flight attendants’ freedom of religion and speech.”

The case is ongoing because the court asked for briefs on the contempt order it issued against Southwest in 2023.  

“Ms. Carter was courageous in standing up to protect her religious and personal beliefs from the schemes of radical union officials and a compliant employer. While she is finally receiving compensation for her struggle, no one should forget that federal law still forces workers to accept union ‘representation’ they oppose and, adding insult to injury, forces workers to pay unwanted unions,” NRWF President Mark Mix said. 

He also notes that Carter is still being forced to pay union dues 13 years after she withdrew her membership. The NRWF told The Center Square she is paying a reduced amount that excludes dues for politics since she opted out of union membership.

“It is outrageous that, even though the court confirmed that the TWU union and Southwest violated Carter’s legal rights, Carter to this day is still forced to subsidize TWU union bosses or else be fired by Southwest. We hope Carter’s case will prompt a long-overdue conversation about how coercive union boss power infringes on the rights of millions of hardworking Americans,” Mix said. 

(The Center Square) - Federal prosecutors plan to dig into past comments made by the man accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner on Saturday and possibly add additional charges. 

Cole Tomas Allen, a resident of Torrance, California, will face a detention hearing in the District of Columbia federal court on Thursday. Federal prosecutors are continuing to gather their evidence ahead of a formal hearing set for May 11. 

Allen was charged with attempted assassination of a sitting U.S. president, discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence, and interstate transmission of a firearm. Allen faces a maximum of life in prison if convicted. 

Prosecutors allege Allen fired at least one round from a 12-gauge shotgun on Saturday. One Secret Service officer was shot in his bulletproof vest but Allen was not charged with assaulting a peace officer. 

"This heroic officer who was hit fired five times at Allen, who was not shot but fell to the ground and was promptly arrested," acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said on Monday.

Blanche said the U.S. Department of Justice is still investigating ballistics at the scene of the incident. 

"We want to get that right so we're still looking at that," Blanche said. "As far as getting into exacting ballistics, I'm not going to do that today because it's still being looked at and finalized."

Jeanine Pirro, U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, said on Monday additional charges would come against Allen beyond the three charges initally levied against him. 

"There will be additional charges as this investigation continues to unfold," Pirro said.

Investigatiors are also digging into past statements made by multiple social media accounts associated with Allen. The posts contained anti-Trump rhetoric. 

"Put a traitor BACK in office, get treason like, I don’t understand why people are surprised by the US ripping itself apart,” an account believed to be associated with Allen wrote in a message last month. “I’m pretty sure that’s the expected outcome of having a traitor at the helm.”

According to the indictment filed against him, Allen referred to himself as "coldForce" in a manifesto emailed to family members before the attack. The various accounts prosecutors are digging into are labeled from a source who identifies as "coldForce." 

Cairo's famed nocturnal rhythm flickered back to life on Tuesday after Egypt eased energy-saving measures spurred by the Middle East war that had forced shops, cafes and restaurants to close early, dimming a city long defined by its late-night buzz.

Soaring energy prices, driven by the US-Israel conflict with Iran, had prompted month-long restrictions to curb electricity use, compressing social and commercial life in the Middle East's largest city into unfamiliar early hours.

Initial shutdowns at 9 pm, later extended to 11 pm, left streets unusually quiet and fuelled frustration among traders and customers alike.

On Sunday, the government announced the measures would be lifted, allowing cafes and restaurants to stay open until 1 am. Shops and malls can now operate until 11 pm, and until midnight on weekends.

By Tuesday night, the change was already visible in Heliopolis, a historic eastern Cairo neighbourhood known for its wide boulevards, early 20th-century architecture and cafe culture. 

At 10 pm, when chairs would normally have been stacked away, tables were instead full. Arcaded buildings glowed as friends gathered over shisha, families strolled with children and couples lingered over coffee.

Residents say the change has been about more than business hours. 

"People were depressed," said Ahmed Megahed, an 82-year-old retiree. 

"With rising prices and daily pressures, staying at home every night made things worse. Now people can go out, breathe fresh air and feel normal again," he told AFP.

For Osama El-Sayed, a 56-year-old government employee, the return of late nights has restored a sense of belonging. 

"I was feeling out of place. Now I finally feel like I fit again," he told AFP with a smile from a roadside cafe in downtown Cairo, a day before the easing took effect.

- Disaster 'for everyone' -

Shopowner Wafaa Ahmed, 58, said the whole city felt the pain of the early closures. 

"It was a disaster before, not just for us shopowners, but for everyone," she said.

A millennium old and home to over 20 million people, Cairo is known for nights that come alive with traffic, noise and light from its roaring main roads, heaving markets and party boats that glow along the Nile river.

During the curbs, which began in late March, shops shuttered early, restaurants cleared their tables and cafes ushered customers out.

With street lights off, residents walked home through shadowy neighbourhoods while cinemas that usually buzz with late screenings stayed dark.

Some stretched out their final cups of tea or took a last pull on their shisha pipes as police patrols enforced the closures, with fines of up to 50,000 Egyptian pounds ($946) and repeat violations risking prison.

Egypt, which relies heavily on imported fuel, has been hit hard by the Iran war. 

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said the monthly energy import bill more than doubled early this year to $2.5 billion.

The pound has shed about 15 percent of its value, while inflation rose above 13 percent in March. 

Madbouly has urged incentives to accelerate a shift to solar power, as the government aired TV campaigns calling on consumers to cut electricity use.

But for Ahmed, the relaxed measures came just in time for her and her business. 

"It is the right decision, especially with the summer season coming," she said, adding that the restrictions had slashed her revenues by 80 percent. 

"No one shops in the morning in summer. Now customers have time."

(The Center Square) – In honor of the United States’ 250th birthday, King Charles III delivered a joint address in Congress Tuesday afternoon, highlighting the bond between the U.S. and the United Kingdom.

The king received a warm and enthusiastic welcome in a chamber often at odds with each other, while defending the NATO alliance.

The monarch’s speech was peppered with historical references and a bit of humor, bonding the two nations through their shared values and history.

The monarch began his speech by addressing Saturday’s shooting at the White House Correspondence Dinner, “with unshakable resolve, such acts of violence will never succeed.”

“Whatever our differences, whatever disagreements we may have, we stand united in our commitment to uphold democracy, to protect all our people from harm, and to salute the courage of those who daily risk their lives in the service of country,” the king said.

“Standing here today, it is hard not to feel the weight of history on my shoulder, because the modern relationship between our two nations and our own peoples spans not merely 250 years, but over four centuries,” he told Congress.

“As I look back across the centuries, Mr. Speaker, emerge certain patterns, certain self-evident truths from which we can learn and draw strength with a spirit of 1776, in our minds, we can perhaps agree that we do not always agree, at least in the first instance,” he continued.

“King George, as you know, never set foot in America, and please rest assured, I’m not here as a part of some cunning rear-guard action,” the king quipped, with the chamber erupting in laughter.

“Two hundred and fifty years ago, or as we say in the United Kingdom, just the other day, they declared independence by balancing contending forces and drawing strength in diversity. They united 13 disparate colonies to forge a nation on the revolutionary idea of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” Charles said. “They carried with them and carried forward great inheritance of the British enlightenment, as well as the ideals which had an even deeper history in English, common law and the Magna Carta.”

King Charles underscored the importance of the two nations uniting in leading the rest of the world.

“It is my hope, my prayer, that in these turbulent times, working together and with our international partners, we can stem the beating of plowshares into swords,” the king said.

“The alliance that our two nations have built over the centuries, and for which we are profoundly grateful to the American people, is truly unique, and that alliance is part of what Henry Kissinger described as Kennedy’s soaring vision of an Atlantic partnership based on twin pillars, Europe and America.”

Charles pointed to the challenges in the world, highlighting the current threat in Europe as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues.

“It is an era that is in many ways more volatile and more dangerous than the world to which my late mother spoke in this chamber in 1991, the challenges we face are too great for any one nation to bear alone, but in this unpredictable environment, our alliance cannot rest on past achievements or assume that foundational principles simply endure. As my prime minister said last month, ours is an indispensable partnership. We must not disregard everything that has sustained us for the last 80 years. Instead, we must build on it, renewal,” said the monarch.

The king reminded the chamber of NATO’s response following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, in an attempt to defend the alliance following threats by President Donald Trump to pull out of it.

“This year, of course, also marks the 25th anniversary of 911, this atrocity was a defining moment for America, and your pain and shock were felt around the whole world….We stood with you then, and we stand with you now in solemn remembrance of a day that shall never be forgotten…In the immediate aftermath of 911 when NATO invoked Article Five for the first time, and the United Nations Security Council was united in the face of terror, we answered the call together, as our people have done so for more than a century, shoulder to shoulder through two world wars, the Cold War, Afghanistan and moments that have defined our shared security,” Charles said.

“Our common ideals were not only crucial for liberty and equality, they are also the foundation of our shared prosperity, the rule of law, the certainty of stable and accessible rules, an independent judiciary resolving disputes and delivering impartial justice, these speeches created the conditions for centuries of unmatched economic growth in our two countries,” he added.

The monarch also highlighted the two nations' annual trade of $430 billon, arguing that it binds the two nations.

“The story of the United Kingdom and the United States is at its heart a story of reconciliation, renewal and remarkable partnership from the bitter divisions of 250 years ago, we forged a friendship that has grown into one of the most consequential alliances in human history. I pray with all my heart that our alliance will continue to defend our shared values with our partners in Europe and the commonwealth and across the world.”

The king ended his historic address reiterating a commitment the two leading nations have made over the last century to the safety and security of the free world.

“And so to the United States of America on your 250th birthday, let our two countries rededicate ourselves to each other in the selfless service of our peoples and of all the peoples of the world,” the king concluded.

The king’s speech marks the first time a monarch has addressed a joint session of Congress since 1991, when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, delivered an address. This marks King Charles III’s first official trip to the U.S. since rising to the throne in 2022.

The king and his wife Queen Camilla will travel to New York City Wednesday before visiting Virginia, wrapping up their state visit Thursday.

(The Center Square) – A years-long effort has resulted in the extradition of a Chinese national facing multiple espionage charges in Houston.

Chinese national Xu Zewei was extradited to the U.S. from Italy over the weekend and appeared before a federal judge in Houston on Monday. 

He faces a nine-count indictment for his role in a People’s Republic of China HAFNIUM computer intrusion campaign targeting U.S. companies, which also compromised thousands of computers worldwide, according to the Office of U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas. 

Zewei was taken into custody in Milan, Italy, last July at the request of U.S. authorities, The Center Square reported. He and PRC national Zhang Yu were both indicted in 2023; Yu remains at large. 

The two are accused of being involved in a hacking scheme from February 2020 through June 2021 directed by the PRC’s Ministry of State Security (MSS) Shanghai State Security Bureau (SSSB), according to the indictment. The MSS and SSSB are China intelligence services responsible for implementing domestic counterintelligence, non-military foreign intelligence and other operations, investigators found. 

The pair in early 2020 targeted U.S.-based universities and leading immunologists and virologists to hack into computer systems and steal research they were conducting on COVID-19 vaccines, treatment and testing, and provide it to SSSB officers, according to the charges. This included hacking emails from virologists and immunologists engaged in COVID-19 research at a university in the Southern District of Texas, the charges allege. Zewei also worked for Shanghai Powerock Network Co. Ltd., “one of many ‘enabling’ companies in the PRC that conducted hacking for the PRC government,” the charges allege. 

“It is notable that the Chinese government directed theft of COVID-19 research” beginning in February 2020 after the outbreak of the virus in mainland China “and at a time when PRC officials were withholding information about the virus and its origin,” former U.S. Attorney Nicholas Ganjei said last year when the indictments were unsealed. “The hacking of these American universities is not just a violation of intellectual property rights, it's an attack on American scientific innovation. The hacking of a U.S. law firm is not just about computer crime. It's about an attack on the American system of justice, which depends on the legal ability of clients to seek and obtain frank and confidential advice from their local counsel.” 

Acting U.S. Attorney John Marck said Zewei is finally answering “for crimes that struck at the heart of American science and security — allegedly stealing COVID-19 research from our universities when the world needed it most."

The FBI Cyber Division said the HAFNIUM campaign compromised more than 12,700 U.S. organizations. The two indicted were a few of many contractors the PRC used “to obscure its hand in cyber operations,” it said. 

The hacking scheme involved exploiting vulnerabilities in a Microsoft Exchange Server, which is used to send, receive and store emails. In March 2021, Microsoft confirmed its exchange had been targeted by PRC-sponsored hackers; in July 2021, U.S. and foreign governments said the PRC MSS orchestrated HAFNIUM. 

Zewei was charged on multiple counts of wire fraud, identity theft, obtaining information by unauthorized access to protected computers, among other charges. If convicted, he faces decades in prison.

An ongoing investigation is being conducted by the FBI’s Houston Field Office.

World Cup players who cover their mouths during confrontations with opponents will face a red card as part of a new initiative aimed at combating racism, world governing body FIFA said on Tuesday.

In a statement following a meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in Vancouver, FIFA confirmed that the rule was one of two law changes that would be introduced at this year's World Cup.

"At the discretion of the competition organiser, any player covering their mouth in a confrontational situation with an opponent may be sanctioned with a red card," FIFA said in a statement.

The new rule follows controversy earlier this year when Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni was accused of racially abusing Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior during a Champions League game in February.

Prestianni was accused of calling Vinicius a "monkey" repeatedly while covering his mouth. Prestianni denied racially abusing Vinicius but was later banned for six matches -- with three of those suspended -- for "homophobic conduct".

FIFA President Gianni Infantino had voiced support for the law change in an interview with British broadcaster Sky News last month.

"If a player covers his mouth and says something, and this has a racist consequence, then he has to be sent off, obviously," Infantino said.

"There must be a presumption that he has said something he shouldn't have said, otherwise he wouldn't have had to cover his mouth.

"If you do not have something to hide, you don't hide your mouth when you say something. That's it, as simple as that."

In a separate law change announced on Tuesday to be enforced at the World Cup, FIFA said that red cards would also be introduced for players leaving the field of play in protest at a referee's decision.

"At the discretion of the competition organiser, the referee may sanction with a red card any player who leaves the field of play in protest at a referee's decision," FIFA said. 

"This new rule will also apply to any team official who incites players to leave the field of play."

FIFA said a team causing a game to be abandoned will forfeit the match.

The move follows the uproar at this year's final of the Africa Cup of Nations, when Senegal's players, head coach Pape Thiaw and his staff walked off the pitch in Rabat after Morocco were awarded a penalty in added time, which forward Brahim Diaz ultimately missed.

Senegal went on to win the final 1-0 in extra time, but were sensationally stripped of the title by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in a bombshell decision issued last month.

The law changes came as FIFA delegates gathered in Vancouver ahead of Thursday's FIFA Congress, the final gathering of football's global governing body before the World Cup gets underway in Canada, Mexico and the United States in June.

Rob Thomson was fired as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday with the club off to a 9-19 start to the Major League Baseball season.

The 62-year-old Canadian went 355-270 over parts of five seasons with the Phillies, who reached the playoffs four years in a row under Thomson.

The Phillies share MLB's worst record with the New York Mets.

Don Mattingly, who played for the New York Yankees from 1982 to 1995, was promoted from bench coach to interim manager of the Phillies for the remainder of the 2026 campaign by Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.

Mattingly's son, Preston Mattingly, is general manager of the Phillies under Dombrowski, making them MLB's first father-son manager and general manager duo.

Thomson replaced Joe Girardi as manager of the Phillies in June of 2022 after a 22-29 start.

Under Thomson's direction, the Phillies went 65-46 with him as interim manager, then ousted St. Louis, Atlanta and San Diego to reach the World Series, where they lost to the Houston Astros.

Philadelphia lost to Arizona in the 2023 National League Championship Series then exited in the first round of the playoffs in 2024 and 2025.

The Phillies snapped a 10-game losing skid on Saturday, the team's longest win drought since dropping 11 games in a row in September 1999.

Thomson became the second MLB manager fired in the opening weeks of the season after Alex Cora was dumped on Saturday by the Boston Red Sox.

US actress Laura Dern has joined the cast of "The White Lotus," HBO announced Tuesday, days after Helena Bonham Carter left the show.

The British star's departure, which came shortly after the new season started filming on the French Riviera, sparked a frenzy of internet speculation over a glitzy series that has become as well known for its behind-the-scenes dramas as for its award-winning on-camera action.

Bosses at HBO said writer Mike White was having a rethink, with the role being rewritten and recast.

"It had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set," a statement said.

There were no immediate details on what kind of character Dern, 59, will play in the show, which typically involves murders, class tensions and sumptuous holiday spots.

The Emmy-winning series is currently filming primarily in Cannes and St. Tropez, as well as Monaco. It will also include some scenes in Paris.

The fourth season takes place against the backdrop of the Cannes Film Festival.

Dern joins an all-star cast that includes British comedian Steve Coogan, as well as France's Vincent Cassel ("Black Swan," "Ocean's Twelve") and Heather Graham ("Boogie Nights" and "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.") 

Singer AJ Michalka, and comedian Kumail Nanjiani also feature.

Dern and White have previously worked together on HBO's "Enlightened" and the comedy-drama "Year of the Dog."
