Australian soldier accused of war crimes in Afghanistan granted bail

Lionel Messi gifted Inter Miami's new coach a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rapids with a brace including a spectacular late winner in front of 75,000 Major League Soccer fans on Saturday.

Shifted to Denver's giant NFL stadium to accommodate the huge demand to see Argentina's World Cup-winning icon, the game appeared to be drifting Colorado's way after a spirited home team fightback from 2-0 down.

But Messi, having already converted a penalty, had other ideas. With just over 10 minutes remaining, the Argentine sprinted onto a through ball sent down the right by Rodrigo De Paul.

He dribbled into the box and somehow threaded a shot with his favorite left foot through three defenders and past the keeper into the corner. 

It handed Messi's longtime friend Guillermo Hoyos a win on his debut as Miami coach, after Javier Mascherano departed the club for "personal reasons" Tuesday, just four months after guiding the club to its first MLS Cup title.

"We have the greatest player in history, someone who completely shifts the momentum of matches," said a delighted Hoyos.

Hoyos, 62, made few changes to the lineup, notably bringing in German Berterame to replace Tadeo Allende, who continues to recover from a muscle injury.

The win sends Inter Miami up to second place in the Eastern Conference. 

"This continues the work we've been doing and the progress the team has been making -- the team is the reigning MLS champion. We are a solid unit," said Hoyos.

"Just look at the energy Inter Miami generates -- how they've had to move to a larger stadium to accommodate it all -- and contrast that with the quiet humility with which we have always tried to go about our business," he added, in Spanish.

- Late heroics -

Playing in front of 75,824 fans -- the second-largest crowd in MLS history -- Miami got off to a sluggish start, but were handed a golden opportunity.

As Colorado tried to play the ball out from the back under Miami's press, Josh Atencio conceded a penalty for tripping Yannick Bright in the box.

Following a lengthy VAR check Messi stepped up, rolling it calmly down the middle as the keeper dived left.

Colorado continued to dominate possession while rarely threatening.

And just before halftime, the Rapids coughed up possession in their own half. A Messi flick allowed Mateo Silvetti to flight in a cross for Berterame to head home from close range.

The Rapids rushed back into the game in the second half. 

Just before the hour mark, Rafael Navarro picked up the ball just inside his own half, drove through the center, skipping inside a defender with a clever feint to bury the ball in the bottom right.

Colorado coach Matt Wells immediately doubled down, bringing on attacker Darren Yapi for Hamzat Ojediran. It paid off spectacularly.

Barely four minutes after their first goal, a pinpoint Lucas Herrington ball over the top found Yapi clean through with a diagonal run for the Rapids' equalizer.

But Messi quelled the home team's comeback with his late heroics.

The game ended on a sour note as Bright was sent off for using abusive language while protesting a yellow card against his teammate Telasco Segovia.

Real Sociedad coach Pellegrino Matarazzo was elated after his side defeated Atletico Madrid to win the Copa del Rey on Saturday, making him the first American coach to claim a major trophy with a club from Europe's top five leagues.

La Real triumphed 4-3 in the shoot-out following a pulsating 2-2 draw after extra-time, to win the trophy for only the fourth time in the club's history.

When Matarazzo was appointed in December the Basque team were hovering above the relegation zone, but he has driven them up the table and now to cup glory.

"It's probably the first (major trophy) for an Italian-American," said Matarazzo, a New Jersey native born to Italian immigrant parents.

Matarazzo said it was not until Pablo Marin's decisive penalty in the shoot-out hit the back of the net that he could really begin to take anything in.

"That was the moment where I realised this is real. It's happening," said the coach.

"You visualise success and you believe in it and you trust the players, but until you cross the finish line you don't really have the feeling that what is happening (is happening), and then it happens.

"And with that penalty, it took a couple of moments to realise, but it's just pure joy."

Matarazzo insisted the team's success over the past few months was not just down to him but the daily work that everyone put in, and the quality of the players he has available.

"We have fantastic players, unbelievable players on this squad with unbelievable character," he said.

"(Behind the success is) the daily work and the commitment that we all have to this team and for this club."

Real Sociedad's players, many of them who came through the club's youth system, were also overjoyed.

"I've never walked on water but it has to be like this," said Real Sociedad striker Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored a penalty to put his team 2-1 up before half-time.

"It's tricky to win a trophy with the team of your life. After this my career is complete and I can die happy."

- 'Leave my mind blank' -

Oyarzabal netted from the spot in the 2020 Copa del Rey final to win it for his club but it was without fans in the stadium because of the global pandemic.

This time around it was Pablo Marin who converted the decisive penalty in the shoot-out.

"I tried to leave my mind blank, calm and serene," he said.

"To be able to live through this with these wonderful people is incredible."

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone, who last led his team to the Copa del Rey in 2013, rued the opportunities his side wasted to win the game before penalties.

"The chances didn't want to go in," said the coach.

The Rojiblancos still have a chance to lift a trophy this year -- they face Arsenal in the Champions League semi-finals, a competition they have never won.

However Simeone said he needed time to absorb the defeat in Seville.

"I'm not thinking about Arsenal, what happens today hurts me a lot. We needed to win and we couldn't win," said Simeone.

Matt Fitzpatrick extended his lead with an erratic three-under par 68 Saturday at the US PGA Tour RBC Heritage as world number one Scottie Scheffler stormed up the leaderboard into second place. 

Overnight leader Fitzpatrick bounced back from a shaky start, holing out from off the greens on 14 and 15 for birdie and eagle respectively, to finish three strokes clear on 17-under-par at Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. 

Having bogeyed the first and third holes, the 2023 RBC Heritage champion clicked into gear around the turn, becoming the only player this week to drive his ball onto the ninth green, with a 338-yarder that he converted for birdie.

Fitpatrick reclaimed the solo lead with a confident 10-foot putt on the 12th.

The Englishman putted in a bobbling left-to-right effort from 26 feet off the green for another birdie on 14 -- the same hole on which he had bounced off a tree on the way to an improbable birdie a day earlier.

And he then executed a perfect chip into the hole from 30 feet on 15 to open a three-shot lead.

Fitzpatrick is seeking his fourth PGA Tour title, adding to last month's Valspar Championship and the 2022 US Open, as well as his 2023 RBC Heritage title.

Scheffler -- having begun Moving Day seven strokes off the lead -- made five birdies in his first six holes to soar into contention.

"You can't ask for much of a better start than that. Came out, nice birdie on the first, good birdie on the second. Kind of stole one on four, and two good birdies there on five and six," he said after.

From a stunning front-nine 31 that shot Scheffler briefly up to tied-first, the four-time major winner's momentum slowed slightly with a string of frustrating pars.

But he birdied the 16th and final holes for a seven-under round of 64, to finish 14-under-par for the tournament with one day to play.

"As you start kind of getting back into contention, I think that's always fun. It's never as fun being on the outside looking in," said Scheffler.

Meanwhile fellow American Brian Harman hit the day's best round with a career-low 63 at windy Harbour Town Golf Links featuring nine birdies.

The Savannah-born golfer thrived in familiar local conditions, finishing with three straight birdies after holing a bunker chip from 30 feet on 17.

"Just tried to keep the pedal down. It's going to take a low number to win," said Harman.

Norway's Victor Hovland, who had started the day one stroke off the lead, had a disastrous start, including a bogey on the first and a double bogey on 3.

He finished a disappointing day six strokes back with a round of 73.

The Golden State Warriors face a raft of questions, including the future of coach Steve Kerr, after their elimination from the NBA play-in tournament.

Kerr's contract is expiring and after 12 years with the club he acknowledged after the Warriors' loss to Phoenix on Friday night that he didn't know if he'd be back.

Golden State won the 2015 NBA title in Kerr's first season at the helm and won three more in 2017, 2018 and 2022.

"These jobs all have an expiration date," Kerr said after an emotional moment with stars Stephen Curry and Draymond Green on the court.

The battle-tested trio shared an extended embrace as Kerr told the players: "I don't know what's going to happen next, but I love you guys to death. Thank you."

Curry said he didn't know if it was a precursor to an official goodbye.

"I don't know if that's a signal of anything," Curry said. "It's just that we wanted to appreciate what we have all poured into this journey."

Kerr told reporters after the game he would take some time and meet with team ownership and management to consider his future.

"It may still go on. It may not," he said. "But we all need to step away a little bit and then reconvene."

One thing Kerr was sure about: "I'm definitely not going and coaching somewhere else next year in the NBA."

The Warriors had battled into the play-in despite multiple injury setbacks. Jimmy Butler, brought in to bolster the aging duo of Curry and Green, tore his left anterior cruciate ligament in January.

Moses Moody was stretchered off in March with a torn knee tendon.

Curry, 38, missed time with a sprained ankle then missed 27 straight games with a nagging knee injury.

Curry has one season remaining on his contract and said he envisions several more NBA campaigns while Green, the subject of trade speculation this season, said he also wants to stay.

Curry admitted that he found Kerr's comments as they hugged "kind of jolting".

"But he left the door open," Curry added.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, fueled by 32 points from Donovan Mitchell, beat the Toronto Raptors 126-113 on Saturday in their NBA playoff opener.

James Harden added a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds and Max Strus scored 24 points off the bench for Eastern Conference fourth seeds Cleveland, who will try to build on their advantage when they host game two of the best-of-seven series on Monday.

RJ Barrett scored 24 points for the Raptors, who never led after the opening minutes and trailed by as many as 24.

Mitchell has now scored at least 30 points in an NBA record nine straight playoff series openers.

"You see the focus," Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson said of Mitchell. "How he just gets more locked-in than ever. The goal for him now is to sustain, whatever that looks like, however many games we go, now it's sustaining and keeping that consistency."

Three other series opened Saturday. The East's third-seeded Knicks host the Atlanta Hawks while in the West Nikola Jokic's third-seeded Denver Nuggets host the Minnesota Timberwolves and the fourth-seeded Los Angeles Lakers host the Houston Rockets.

The Lakers and Rockets series pits Lakers superstar LeBron James against an old rival in Houston's Kevin Durant.

But James is shouldering a heavy load with league-leading scorer Luka Doncic and teammate Austin Reaves sidelined indefinitely in the wake of late season injuries.

The 2026 NFL Draft, held from Thursday to Saturday in Pittsburgh, will likely include a handful of former Mizzou football players hearing their names called. 

There are many draft-eligible players from Mizzou, but only some of them are expected to be selected. The Missourian will only have projections for the following players: edge rusher Zion Young, linebacker Josiah Trotter, defensive tackle Chris McClellan, wide receiver Kevin Coleman Jr., offensive tackle Keagen Trost, cornerback Toriano Pride Jr. and linebacker Khalil Jacobs. 

This story will frequently mention Top 30 visits. A Top 30 visit is an official pre-draft meeting between NFL teams and prospects at a team's facility that usually involves interviews, medical checks and film study. Teams can invite up to 30 draft-eligible prospects.

Predicting where these players will wind up is an extremely tough task. But we'll give it our best shot. 

Zion Young: Kansas City Chiefs

Young, who took 11 top 30 Visits, didn't visit Kansas City. However, the Chiefs need to bolster their defensive line, which struggled to get consistent production last season outside of long-tenured defensive tackle Chris Jones and 2022 first-round pick George Karlaftis off the edge. 

The Chiefs may not use the No. 9 overall pick on an edge rusher, as they also have roster needs at cornerback, wide receiver and right tackle.

Plus, there are plenty of prospects worthy of the No. 9 pick who could immediately fill a need outside of edge rusher, including LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane, Miami offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa and a handful of wide receivers, namely Ohio State's Carnell Tate, Arizona State's Jordyn Tyson and USC's Makai Lemon. 

The Chiefs also hold the No. 29 overall pick, which they netted from trading star cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams, and the No. 40 overall pick. Young has widely been projected to be taken in either the late first round or early-to-mid second round.

Josiah Trotter: Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals could use a lot of help on defense. They allowed 5.2 yards per rush attempt last season, the second-most in the NFL. They also gave up 6.2 yards per play, which ranked dead last. The defense, which has often nullified the efforts of an elite offense, wasn't just an issue in 2025: improbably, Cincinnati is 5-8 over the past two seasons when scoring at least 34 points. 

If they don't use the No. 10 overall pick on a linebacker, which would likely be Ohio State's Sonny Styles (if he's available), the Bengals could target a linebacker with their second or third-round pick. 

Trotter, an excellent run defender who led Mizzou in tackles this past season, took a Top 30 visit with Cincinnati. He also had visits with the Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants. 

Speaking of Big Blue ... 

Chris McClellan: New York Giants

McClellan and Trotter both visited the Giants on Wednesday, and the former could provide immediate help to a team that might lose their top interior defensive lineman. 

Recent reports indicate that the Giants and All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence have been unable to agree on a contract extension. A cornerstone of New York's defense since his rookie season in 2019, Lawrence requested a trade earlier this month.

The defensive-line depth chart behind Lawrence is uninspiring. Plus, the Giants need to improve their run defense, which has been an issue for several seasons. The Giants haven't allowed fewer than 4.5 yards per rushing attempt in a season since 2020. Last season, they gave up a league-worst 5.3 yards per attempt. 

Kevin Coleman Jr.: New York Jets

The Jets have a lot of roster holes, but wide receiver is an especially major one. In 2025, the Jets became the first team in NFL history to play 16 or more games in a season without a player reaching 400 receiving yards. 

Part of that had to do with star wideout Garrett Wilson only playing seven games due to a nagging knee injury he suffered in early October — he finished with 395 receiving yards and four touchdowns. But the depth chart behind Wilson could use some reinforcements. It wouldn't be surprising if the Jets, who have nine draft picks (including four in the top 50), used at least two on wide receivers. 

Should he be selected by the Jets, Coleman Jr. would join a pair of former Tigers in quarterback Brady Cook and offensive tackle Armand Membou. 

Keagen Trost: Denver Broncos 

Predicting a landing spot for any projected Day 3 pick is almost impossible, including with Trost.

That being said, Trost only took one Top 30 visit, and that was with Denver. Before last year, the Broncos had used a Day 3 pick on an offensive lineman in three consecutive drafts. 

Toriano Pride Jr.: Buffalo Bills

Pride Jr. literally ran into the national spotlight at the NFL Scouting Combine, as his 4.32-second 40-yard dash was the fastest among all cornerbacks at the event.

The Bills could look to add depth at cornerback behind Christian Benford, Dee Alford and Maxwell Hairston, Buffalo's 2025 first-round pick. The Bills have also spent at least one Day 3 pick on a defensive back in every draft since 2019. 

Khalil Jacobs: Indianapolis Colts

While Jacobs isn't expected to be a high pick in the draft, the two-year Tiger has still received a good bit of interest from NFL teams during the pre-draft process, as Jacobs has taken top 30 visits with the Colts, Jets and New England Patriots. 

Under general manager Chris Ballard, who's held the position since Jan. 2017, Indianapolis has a hugely successful history of turning mid-to-late round linebackers into at least playable starters. That includes former Tiger Jaylon Carlies, a fifth-round pick in 2024 who could reportedly be in line for a good bit of playing time this fall after dealing with injuries for much of last season. 

Plus, the Colts traded longtime starter Zaire Franklin to the Green Bay Packers in March, so linebacker is a position the Colts could target in the draft. 

Pope Leo XIV lamented that his trip to Africa had been marked by a war of words with US President Donald Trump as he arrived in Angola on Saturday on the third leg of the tour.

In the capital Luanda, he travelled in his popemobile to meet President Joao Lourenco, with hundreds of cheering and waving people lining the route.

Leo flew into the oil-rich country from Cameroon, where he ended his visit with a huge public mass.

On the plane over, he told journalists that he regretted that remarks he had made during his tour had been interpreted as a response to criticism from Trump, insisting he had no interest in debating the US leader.

He cited a speech about "tyrants" ransacking the world that he delivered in Cameroon on Thursday on the second leg of the trip, saying that the remarks had been written well before Trump's "comment on myself and on the message of peace that I am promoting."

"And yet it was perceived as if I were trying to start a new debate with the president, which doesn't interest me at all," Leo said.

Leo had blasted "tyrants" while on a high-security visit to Cameroon's northwestern city of Bamenda, the epicentre of a nearly decade-long English-speaking separatist insurgency that has killed thousands. 

The remarks were interpreted by the US media in particular as a reference to Trump.

But Leo insisted that "there's been a certain narrative that has not been accurate in all of its aspects".

Trump had said on April 12 he was "not a big fan of Pope Leo", and accused his fellow American of "toying with a country (Iran) that wants a nuclear weapon".

- Dissent, exploitation -

Throughout his 11-day four-nation Africa visit, which started in Algeria, the pope has delivered pointed warnings against corruption, the plunder of the continent's resources and the dangers of artificial intelligence. 

In Luanda, he condemned the "social and environmental disasters" caused by material exploitation.

"How much suffering, how many deaths, how many social and environmental disasters are caused by this logic of exploitation," he said in an address to officials including President Joao Lourenco.

Angola is one of Africa's top producers of crude oil and is also rich in resources like diamonds but inequality is stark as much of the wealth does not filter down to ordinary people.

Around a third of the largely young population of 36.6 million people lives below the international poverty line of $2.15 per day, according to the World Bank.

Leo also urged authorities to "not be afraid of dissent".

Authorities in the country, ruled by Lourenco's socialist MPLA party since independence in 1975, have been accused of stifling freedom of expression including through heavy-handed responses to demonstrations.

Poverty was partly blamed for a three-day looting spree during a strike against fuel hikes in July last year when around 30 people were killed in a police crackdown that was criticised by rights groups. Hundreds of people were jailed.

Leo is the third pontiff to visit the country, where around 44 percent of the population is Catholic, after John Paul II in 1992 and Benedict XVI in 2009.

"There is a lot of suffering, a lot of poverty in Angola. I hope the pope will see with his own eyes the needs of the youth here," said Antonio Masaidi, a 33-year-old engineer.

On Sunday, Leo will celebrate a giant open-air mass in Kilamba on Luanda's outskirts.

In the afternoon, he will travel by helicopter to the village of Muxima, about 130 kilometres (80 miles) southeast of Luanda, home to a 16th-century church that has become one of southern Africa's most important pilgrimage sites.

On April 20, he is due to travel more than 800 kilometres from the capital to visit a retirement home in Saurimo and celebrate another mass before departing the following morning for Equatorial Guinea.

Five people were killed in Kyiv on Saturday after a gunman opened fire and took hostages at a supermarket in the Ukrainian capital before being killed during an arrest attempt, officials said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that at least 10 people were hospitalised with wounds and trauma after the shooting, which took place in a residential district in the city's south.

Footage posted by the UNIAN news agency, which AFP was unable to immediately verify, showed a man carrying a gun and shooting at a person from close range near a block of flats.

The suspect then entered a supermarket where gunshots were heard, Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Four hostages from the supermarket "have been rescued", Zelensky said later on social media.

"The attacker in Kyiv who opened fire on civilians has been eliminated," Zelensky said, offering condolences to the families of the victims.

An AFP reporter saw the supermarket -- which had blood stains on its shop window -- cordoned off by a heavy security presence, with officers wearing bulletproof vests and crime investigators arriving at the scene.

The assailant's motive was not immediately known.

- 40-minute standoff -

Ukrainian Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko said the suspect was a 58-year-old man born in Moscow and that according to initial reports, "he used an automatic weapon".

An employee of the supermarket, Tetyana, told AFP that she had heard sounds "in the store, like champagne being popped or balloons bursting several times. Then the customers started shouting, 'Run!'".

"There's a spot where you can hide behind the refrigerators, and we ran there. I heard a man moaning," she recounted, her voice trembling.

Zelensky urged "a swift investigation" into the shooting and said that all the circumstances of the incident were being established.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said the standoff between the assailant and police negotiators at the supermarket lasted around 40 minutes.

"We tried to persuade him. Realising that there was likely an injured person inside, we offered to bring in tourniquets to stop the bleeding... But he didn't respond," Klymenko told reporters at the scene. 

"That's why the order was given to eliminate him," he added, saying that the gunman had killed one of the people taken hostage.

Ukraine, which has been fighting a more than four-year-long war with Russia, has seen sporadic shooting incidents but has a relatively low crime rate.

Last year, a man shot dead two people in a Kyiv suburb in a dispute over the sale of a firearm.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced an easing of restrictions on research into psychedelic drugs -- such as so-called "magic mushrooms" -- that have shown promise in treating people with mental health conditions.

Flanked by US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr, top medical officials and podcaster Joe Rogan, who has pushed for access to the drugs, Trump signed an executive order that would help federal researchers cut through the red tape to allow for quicker studies.

The president said the order would "clear away unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles, improve data sharing among the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the Department of Veterans Affairs and facilitate fast rescheduling of any psychedelic drugs that become FDA approved."

Currently, many psychedelics including LSD and psilocybin ("magic mushrooms") are classified -- or "scheduled" -- as having high abuse and addiction potential, and are not approved for medical use, limiting the ability for scientists to study them.

If the FDA, which is charged with regulating pharmaceuticals in the United States, officially finds a medical benefit for some of the psychedelics, they could be rescheduled, allowing for greater clinical use.

The order only provides for accelerated research and does not immediately require law enforcement authorities to reclassify the drugs, meaning therapeutic use will not expand immediately.

In recent years, there has been a growing push to research the effects of the drugs in treating people -- especially war veterans -- with difficult anxiety and depression cases, especially those who had experienced traumatic stress.

Many veterans and other patients have complained that traditional antidepressant cocktails not only fail to work but change their personalities in ways that alienate them from their friends and family.

In 2023, 6,398 veterans took their own lives, the Department of Veterans Affairs said. 

During the signing ceremony at the White House, Trump pointed to one drug called ibogaine, claiming patients who had taken it "experienced an 80 to 90 percent reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety within one month."

"Can I have some, please?" he joked.

The full extent of the benefits and potential side effects of psychedelic medications is not yet known, since research has been restricted. 

While many are thought to show promising mental health benefits, there are risks. Ibogaine, for instance, is thought to potentially damage the heart.

Thousands of people demonstrated across Germany on Saturday, urging a faster shift to renewable energy and accusing conservative Chancellor Friedrich Merz's coalition of putting the brakes on the transition.

In Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg and Munich, crowds took to the streets waving placards emblazoned with slogans including "renewables are our life" and "escape the fossil fuel trap". 

A coalition of campaign groups organising the demonstrations said about 80,000 people took part nationwide, although police gave lower figures.

"The war in Iran and exploding energy prices make it very clear once again that we need to free ourselves from fossil fuels as quickly as possible," Christoph Bautz from campaign group Campact, which helped organise the protests, told AFP at the Berlin demonstration.

He claimed that Economy Minister Katherina Reiche, from Merz's centre-right CDU party, was seeking to slow down the shift to renewables, which he said is "completely out of touch with the times and serves only the oil and gas industry".

Merz's coalition, and in particular Reiche -- a former energy company executive -- have come under fire over various policies, including support for watering down EU-wide car emissions rules and their plans to build more gas-fired power plants.

The chancellor argues steps need to be taken to relieve the burdens on Germany's struggling manufacturers, and help revive Europe's biggest economy whose heavy industry has suffered from high energy costs. 

While Germany has greatly expanded solar and wind power, with most of the country's electricity now provided by renewables, the new government's actions have fuelled fears it will miss its ambitious climate targets.

Luisa Neubauer, a leading figure in the Fridays for Future movement in Germany, told AFP at the Berlin demonstration that she was "positively surprised" by how many people had turned up. 

"I'm surprised that the federal government thinks it can get away with its lame excuses and its obstruction of the energy transition," she said. "No one here is buying that."

The organisers, who included groups like Greenpeace and WWF, said about 24,000 people demonstrated in Berlin, 30,000 in Cologne, 15,000 in Hamburg and 12,000 in Munich.

Police in Berlin gave an initial estimate of 9,000, and in Cologne 4,500.
